I had crossed the line. I was free. But there was no one to welcome me.
- Harriet Tubman
Refugees, who are fleeing persecution and war, are met in the US with multiple services to help them reclaim their lives. Rarely, however, is there someone to help them navigate their new reality. That’s where people, not programs, step in. That’s where you step in.
Join Welcome Party
Text “letsparty” to 55498. Welcome Party is our city-wide alert system to notify you when there are opportunities to welcome new refugees in Tallahassee, FL (Request a Welcome Party in your city).
Here are some of the ways you might help:
-
Be the first face someone sees when they arrive in a new place. We’ll greet them with handmade welcome signs in their language.
-
Because of the language barrier, refugees are often medically underserved or misunderstood. We show up as a friend to help with insurance, scheduling, and to represent the need. No language skills are necessary. (Background check required to serve as a medical advocate.)
-
Through a relaxed setting for conversation at a home, you can partner up with a refugee to practice English and maybe even learn Arabic, Swahili, Dari, or Pashto. This is on your own schedule, decided with your refugee conversation partner.
-
Help refugees navigate the grocery store, food stamps, the bus system, and more.
